Scottish Renewable Electricity
Scottish wind farm mapToday, The Scotsman newspaper reports on a paper submitted to the Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Board that paints a very positive picture of the current and future status of renewable electricity generation capacity in Scotland.
Switched on to Switching off (SOSO)
Switched On to Switching Off (SOSO) is a TES Energy Working Group project funded by the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund with the aim of engaging with and supporting the local community to reduce energy consumption, improve energy efficiency and investigate the potential for local renewable energy generation over two streets in Edinburgh.Read more
Chief Scientist at the Department of Energy and Climate Change backs Heat Pumps
The Governemnt's Chief Scientist at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Professor David MacKay (author of the excellent book "Sustainabile Energy - Without the Hot Air"), wants to see an end to the use of natural gas for central heating and the replacement of gas boilers with heat pumps that extract heat from the atmosphere (see original article).
“Setting fire to chemicals like gas should be made a thermodynamic crime,” he said. “If people want heat they should be forced to get it from heat pumps. That would be a sensible piece of legislation.”
How serious are we about reducing greenhouse gases emissions?
Energy Fair: Alistair Cant Lister Housing, Drummond Community Big Band, Alister Hamilton, Ian Bryden presentationThe Energy Fair on 5th September, a well attended programme of stalls, talks and children's events, was part of the Climate Challenge Fund project we are conducting in two pre 1900 'hard to treat' tenement streets in South Edinburgh to share ideas about energy efficiency. The fair combined practical information on how to be more energy efficient with case studies and talks on energy efficiency. Read more
Heating more efficiently using Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a bit of a villain when it comes to climate change.
Ecocute
But it may also be a climate saviour if we use it intelligently.
And that's thanks to a Norwegian and the inhabitants of another group of islands similar in size to the UK but further east. Much further east. The Japanese.Read more
Electric Heat
UK natural gas production is in steep decline. We use natural gas in Scotland for heating. 85% of homes in Edinburgh are heated using natural gas. The fact that our own domestic prduction is in rapid decline and that our natural gas imports are rising should give us cause for concern.
UK Natural Gas Production
Our gas is increasingly being imported by ship from Qatar in the middle east. The gas is transported in liquefied form - Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). It is likely that we will have a glut of gas in the UK in the next two or three years, but after that the outlook is not so clear.
Perhaps we should use electricity for heating? After all, we have loads of renewable electricity generating capacity coming on stream.
TES Event - Energy Fair
Our Energy Fair on 5th September at South Morningside Primary School attracted more than a hundredRobin Harper with Pat Abel and Michele Hipwell local residents through the door. Nigel Griffiths, MP, Robin Harper MSP and Mark Lazarowicz, MSP opened the fair It was a lively affair with a local jazz band playing over lunch time, childrens events and lots of advice on how to reduce our energy and on the existing renewables that will take us forward.
