Carbon Conversations
Primary tabs
Carbon Conversations is a six-session course in personal sustainability which encourages people to get together over a cup of tea to discuss practical ways of reducing their carbon footprint. From local food to light bulbs and greener travel, the Carbon Conversations programme gets down to the everyday challenges of climate defence.
The course aims to halve participants’ carbon footprint (the UK average is 12 tonnes per year) within five years. The particularly effective aspect of the programme is that it helps people overcome the psychological barriers to action in their daily lives by establishing, through open and non-judgemental conversation, a new social norm of carbon frugality. Carbon Conversations helps people reduce their individual carbon footprint and become confident about talking about issues in their families, communities, work and beyond.
The programme includes a structured workbook, facilitated discussions and games focused on showing participants the carbon impacts of their daily activities. For a couple of hours a fortnight, group members come together to participate in the course and support each other to find practical ways of reducing carbon.
Carbon Conversations seems to be working. During the programme, most participants cut their carbon by about 1 tonne and made plans to halve their total emissions over the next four to five years. It also gives them the tools to talk about climate change in their families and workplaces as well as bring issues to political representatives.
