Hello,Scotland’s Climate Change Act is world-leading. With a 42% reduction target by 2020, it's in line with scientists' recommendations if we want to protect people and nature from the devastating impacts of climate change.

But while we're leading the way with our Climate Act, it'll be impossible to meet our commitments if there isn't adequate funding.

Suppressed UK Government Peak Oil Report Released

A report from the UK government's Department of Energy and Climate Change dated 1st June 2009 has just been released and is available to download here.

According to the report, the domestic policies that increase our resilience to peak oil are

"We can no longer assume (economic) growth"

A number of commentators have made the connection between energy supplies peaking, the resulting end of economic growth and the consequences thereof. Nicole Foss of The Automatic Earth springs to mind. But there are others inlcuding Dr Mike Haywood who spoke in Edinburgh recently. And, of course Chris Martenson. But it is not often you get to hear a stockbroker talking about the end of economic growth.

The Price of Oil

With events in North Africa and the Middle East putting oil in the news recently, it's perhaps time to say a few words about the oil price.

Here's a graph of the movement of the daily oil price (Brent)  over the last 20 years or so.

By looking at the annual price over the same time period, we can smooth out some of the fluctuations in the graph as shown in the next plot.

Which Renewable Technology?

OK - so you want to install some renewable technology because you're worried about climate change or peak oil and gas and you want to do your bit.

So, which technology do you choose?

Well first let's suspend practicalities and assume that you have a nice south facing roof with no shading for solar photovoltaics or solar thermal and you also have space to fit an air source heat pump.
